The Associate Director will supervise and implement Center programs and projects; serve as the Co-PI for the Department of Education
Grant; and collaborate in establishing and reviewing policies of the Center.


• Supervise and implement Center's programs and projects

• Co-PI for the Department of Education Grant; manage all grant projects and programs: prepare grant proposals, narratives and
budgets; supervise and implement grant projects and programs; manage and supervise preparation of grant reporting; Advise in planning of
evaluation of grant-related programs; attend with the director meetings with federal agencies and grant officials

• Oversee the Center’s budget and financial policy

• Supervise Center staff and student assistants: hire, train, assign/review work, conduct performance evaluations, address work
issues, set work schedules and goals

• Collaborate with the director in establishing and reviewing operating policies for the unit

• Oversee and administer the Center’s FLAS fellowship program; advise fellowship committee on FLAS policies and priorities; Serve as liaison with the Graduate College Fellowship Office and the U.S. Department of Education concerning fellowships; obtain approvals for students' overseas programs

• Serve as the academic advisor for REEES BA majors and minors: monitor students' progress toward graduation, both REEES and general University requirements; interpret University policy as it pertains to students and their programs; serve as liaison between students and campus offices, including Study Abroad

• Work with College and University development officers to obtain gifts and endowments: research potential funding sources, develop
relationships with donors, manage database of REEEC donors

• Advise and support the director in the development of proposals for new courses and curricula

• Assist the Center director with management of the Center's MA Program: supervise completion of admission, graduation, and student
petition paperwork; coordinate with Director on student assistantship funding

• Act as liaison to campus and university departments and represent the director as needed



• Master's degree;

• Strong organizational and communication skills;

• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously without supervision;

• Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office and databases)


• PhD in a humanities or social science discipline with a concentration in Russian, East European, or Eurasian studies;

• Administrative experience, including budget management;

• Experience with U.S. Department of Education Title VI grants, grant writing, and program evaluation;

• International experience;

• Advanced proficiency in Russian or another language of the region;

• Interdisciplinary and creative orientation;

• Knowledge of UIUC organization, policies, and procedures.


This is a full-time, academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Over the past twenty years, the study of revolution has lost the centrality it once enjoyed. Yet the study of revolutions has never been so important: in thinking through the aftermath of the Arab uprisings, exploring the ideology of ISIS and other Islamist groups, understanding self-proclaimed revolutionary movements in the West, and interpreting the experience of states that continue to see themselves as revolutionary, such as China, Iran, and Cuba. The study of revolution needs to catch up with the actual experience of revolutionary movements and states.

One barrier to this endeavor is the fracturing of the study of revolutions into different disciplines and sub-fields.
