The Consortium of Belarusian and Lithuanian organisations under the auspices of the Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania) and "Political Sphere" Institute (Belarus) is pleased to announce a call for individual applications for the 2nd International Congress of Belarusian Studies, held on September 28-30, 2012 in Kaunas, Lithuania.

Around 200 scholars from around the world, engaged in studying Belarus and East-Central Europe region, are expected to participate. The Congress will bring together researches of social sciences and humanities, and offer the discussion of regional development issues, Belarus relations with other countries, and other topical problems.

In 1990 the American Library Association approved Policy #61, Library Services to the Poor. This policy was created based on the belief that “it is crucial that libraries recognize their role in enabling poor people to participate fully in a democratic society, by utilizing a wide variety of available resources and strategies.” The policy, overseen by ALA’s Office for Literacy and Outreach Services, includes sixteen objectives to accomplish this goal, from promoting food drives to eliminating fees for those who can’t afford to pay them, as well as creating low-income programs and services. Чечня: логика насилия и опыт войны
Париж, 22-23 октября 2012 г.

Колониальная война, контртеррористическая операция, восстановление конституционного порядка, война на уничтожение – вот лишь несколько терминов, к которым с 1994 г. прибегали участники и наблюдатели, чтобы определить войну в Чечне. Это многообразие свидетельствуeт о различиях в объяснении причин, целей и последствий войны, а также подчеркивают ее исключительность. Цель конференции не только обозреть существующие работы и стимулировать исследование войны в Чечне, но и вписать случившиеся там акты насилия в компаративную перспективу, которая бы учитывала новые подходы, возникшие в научных работах о современных конфликтов а так же в историографии войн XX в.

Вопросы, которые планируется обсудить на конференции, могут быть сгруппированы вокруг четырех основных тем.
1 – Методологические вопросы: Как изучать эту войну (этика, источники...)?
2- Политические механизмы насилия
3 - Опыт войны и ее социальные последствия

“Formal” and “Informal” Central Asia: Institutions, Identities and Discourses
The first annual conference of the Central Asian Studies Institute at AUCA initiated discussion on the state of scholarship on and in Central Asia. The second conference continues a discourse on how we make sense of the region by taking the alleged boundary between “formal” and “informal” Central Asia as a starting point. As the terms themselves are being hotly debated elsewhere, this conference firstly encourages scholars to look at the nature, scale and legitimacy of such a binary division. It then calls for the deeper analysis of “formal” and “informal” institutions and identities, which are believed to be of key importance in understanding the processes of socio-political and cultural transformation in the region. The Einstein Forum and the Daimler and Benz Foundation are offering a fellowship for outstanding young thinkers who wish to pursue a project in a different field from that of their previous research. The purpose of the fellowship is to support those who, in addition to producing superb work in their area of specialization, are also open to other, interdisciplinary approaches – following the example set by Albert Einstein. The fellowship includes living accommodations for five to six months in the garden cottage of Einstein`s own summerhouse in Caputh, Brandenburg, only a short distance away from the universities and academic institutions of Potsdam and Berlin. The fellow will receive a stipend of EUR 10,000 and reimbursement of travel expenses.
