University of Pittsburgh, Nineteenth-Century Russian Literature

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at theUniversity of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a specialization in nineteenth-century Russian literature to begin in August 2010, pending budgetary approval. Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. Native or near-native (or ACTFL superior-level) proficiency in English and Russian required. In addition to undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in Russian literature, the position may require teaching Russian language at all levels (including content-based advanced courses) and general-education literature and culture courses in English (both large lecture-based courses and smaller discussion-oriented ones). Expertise in a second Slavic language and literature is desirable. Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest and experience in teaching and promise of significant scholarly achievement. Candidates should arrange to submit a letter of application, CV, three confidential letters of recommendation (which should address both scholarship and teaching), representative student teaching evaluations, representative syllabi, and samples of scholarly writing (the length of one or two journal articles) by surface mail to:

CFP: «Японское культурное влияние и молодежные солидарности на постсоветском пространстве»

Дата проведения семинара: 5-6 декабря 2011 года. Место проведения семинара: Центр молодежных исследований, НИУ ВШЭ – Санкт-Петербург. Семинар проводится при поддержке Фонда Академического Развития НИУ ВШЭ в Санкт-Петербурге.

Центр молодежных исследований НИУ ВШЭ в Санкт-Петербурге при участии коллег из Гарвардского Университета проводит семинар, на котором планируется обсудить исследовательские проблемы, теорию и методологию изучения японского культурного влияния, прежде всего аниме-культур, на молодежные практики и солидарности в постсоветских странах.

Цель данного междисциплинарного семинара — создание международной сети исследователей, работающих по данной тематике; обсуждение актуальной теории и методологии изучения популяризации японской музыки, театра, кино, спорта, аниме, литературы и т.п. в молодежной среде на постсоветском пространстве.

К участию приглашаются как начинающие, так и опытные исследователи, работающие по данной проблематике. Рабочие языки – русский и английский. Если Вы не можете участвовать в семинаре, но заинтересованы в сотрудничестве, будем рады включить Вас в сеть исследователей, интересующихся вышеобозначенной темой, и в дальнейшем информировать о наших активностях, в том числе и о планируемых новых семинарах, конференциях и прооектах.

У организаторов семинара в отдельных случаях есть возможность частичного покрытия расходов на проживание и проезд участников семинара. Заявки на участие в семинаре направлять по адресу: youth.hse.spb@gmail.com

Конкурс продлится до 31 октября Карамзинские стипендии предоставляются для проведения исследований в рамках коллективных научных проектов, реализуемых в Центре гуманитарных исследований (ЦГИ). Стипендии предназначены для молодых исследователей – кандидатов наук (или PhD), готовящих к публикации книгу, или аспирантов, завершающих работу над кандидатской диссертацией.

Темы исследовательских проектов ЦГИ 2012 года:

    Русский язык как глобальный ресурс и новые технологии.
    Научно-техническая интеллигенция в историко-культурной перспективе: формирование среды, мировоззрения и трудовой этики.
    Опыт урегулирования межнациональных конфликтов после мировых войн (Кавказ).
    Становление Российского государства раннего Нового времени: налоговое измерение.


Стипендия включаетежемесячную выплату в размере до 60 000 рублей, в зависимости от квалификации исследователя, характера и объема выполняемой работы, а также места постоянного проживания; компенсацию дорожных расходов (одна поездка в Москву от места проживания и обратно); компенсацию расходов на копирование материалов в библиотеках и архивах (по согласованию с руководителем проекта) и др.

Soviet Era Posters at Princeton University


This morning, when I was doing a survey of our Russian collections, I discovered that at Princeton University Library, we do have an excellent collection of early Children's books from Russia (part of Cotsen Children's Library. Besides this collection, I discovered that we have an excellent collection of Soviet era posters. Some of these posters are digitized and can be accessed here.

Re-Defining Byzantium: Art and Thought in the Byzantine World

Although not directly related to Slavic Studies, I want to bring to the attention of my readers an important conference at Princeton University on Byzantine Art. The program of this two day conference can be found here.

I was lucky to hear papers of several specialists including an innovative paper of Dr. Jelena Trkulja of Princeton University that was entitled, "Experiencing Faith: Byzantine Ecclesiastical Architecture Revisited".

Call for Papers- The Silk Road: Interwoven History

ACANSRS (Association for Central Asian Civilizations & Silk Road Studies) invites scholars/researchers of Central Asia to submit your recent research papers for our annual publication 2012, tentatively tiled "The Silk Road: Interwoven History". The topics of the prospective articles could be in the fields of religion, art, archaeology, anthropology, musicology, philology, and history of the regions involved with the Silk Road trade. Please send us a brief summary of your possible article for the contribution by e-mail before the submission of the full article.

Tentative title of the multi-author publication 2012: The Silk Road: Interwoven History

    1) Length: about 5000-9000 words (15 ­ 30 book pages) ­ double spaced/typed including footnotes and bibliography (1-2 pages).
    2) Submission deadline: Dec 30, 2011 (both in pdf and Word doc files by e-mail attachment to editor@acansrs.org in addition to two hard copies sent to us)
    3) Diacritic fonts and foreign languages such as Chinese can be included to a limited extent (Please consult the editor).

Site Self-description: "Soviet Samizdat Periodicals is a database of information about editions of classic Soviet samizdat, 1956-1986. The Database includes approximately 300 titles, representing all known types of samizdat periodical editions from this late Soviet era, including human rights bulletins, poetry anthologies, rock zines, religious and national editions. The Database is fully searchable. Researchers will find detailed bibliographic and archival information. The site also includes information about samizdat and dissidence for the general public. The website is intended to provide a forum for continuing discussion about this outstanding phenomenon of recent history."
