Depresyondayım: Göksel (2001)

Yesterday, I presented Aygun Kazimova- a pop-star from Azerbaijan. I posted her clip called "Depresyondayem". Today, I discovered that this song was originally sung by Turkish Pop-singer Göksel in 2001.I have decided to post it for my readers with lyrics. This song is in her 2000 album called "Körebe". This term can be roughly translated as "Blindman's Bluff. I mean when one is in love, one is often smitten by it?

Bugün evden çıkmadım
Telefona bakmadım
Çok yedim çok ağladım
Arandım bir sigara
Daha saçlarımı taradım
Dudağımı boyadım
Giydim giydim çıkardım
Beğenmedim güzel olmadım,
Depresyondayım,
Unutuldum,
Aldatıldım sevgilimden ayrıldım,
Çok yalnızım kimseye kızamadım
Kimseye küsemedim
Sonunda kendime küstüm
Sonunda hayata
Düşündüm banka soymayı
Uluorta soyunmayı
Hayatımdaki herkesi vurmayı
Affedin,
Depresyondayım depresyondayım,
Unutuldum
Aldatıldım sevgilimden ayrıldım
Çok yalnızım

Azerbaijan and Petrol and Aygun!

While the gas prices are inching upwards, Azerbaijani pop music divahttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif Aygun released last year her song with Miri Yusif entitled "Petrol". I wanted to bring it to the attention of my readers. Aygun continues to amaze me with her music. Although some of my Azerbaijani friends tend to disagree and call her national disgrace for her very extravagant behavior, I still believe that enjoying her music is highly personal matter.

Her song called, "Veten Anadir" or "Homeland is mother" made me quite emotional about nostalgia that one feels as an immigrant to one's old country. Of course, the song that Aygun sang was in the context of Karabakh/Artsakh issue that is to this day has been divisive issue between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Her voice is indeed captivating.

Her other song that makes my soul cry and long for Azerbaijan and its warm people is called "Yol gedirəm". So from Petrol we are now taken on a road-trip.

The lyrics of this particular song make me thing of my own journey...
Dodaqlarımda təbəssüm
Bəbəylərimdə ümid və qürur
İçimdə ağlamaq ehtiyacı
Yol gedirəm yorulanadək..
Qarşımda sil-silə dağlar
Sərt qayalar, soyuq dəniz
Bir tək canla qürub çağı
Yol gedirəm yorulanadək..

Ovcumda sirr, barmaqlarımda qabar, ürəyimdir varım-yoxum
Ruhumda həzin lay-lay, başımda məğrub eşqim
Yol gedirəm yorulanadək..

Bom-boş bir səssizlik, nə sevgi, nə də nifrət
Qarşımda bir tək zalım gecə
Dünya, yiyə dur, qəribəm bir yol göstər
Bu dərdlərdən qurtulum necə?!

Yol gedirəm yorulanadək..

Her song with Namiq called bağlanmiram is also interesting as it depicts in a way Azerbaijani culture of complex relationships between a man and a woman. Baglanmaq means to be tied to something (one of the meanings).

I love her another song with a title "I am depressed" or "Depresiondayem". I simply love the melody and all that talk about Ayrliq, etc.

Dziga Vetrov (David A. Kaufman) Films-Kino Glaz Online

There are multiple sites about Dziga Vetrov and his Kino-Glaz and other films of the early Soviet Period. These sites allow its readers to enjoy some of the Soviet filmography. There are two sites that I would specifically recommend to the readers of my blog. The first site is at UBUWEB, where a reader of this blog can watch two films by Dziga Vetrov: Three songs about Lenin (1934) and Kino-Eye (1924). It is interesting to also note the propagandist character of these early Soviet Films. But if you analyze them closely, you do find a level of silent dissent. For example, sayings like- There is not a single father who did (things for us) as Lenin did, is open for our interpretation.

The other interesting film entitled, "Казахстан — фронту" can be found here.

The other site is Senses of Cinema.
More information about filmography of Dziga Vetrov can be found at this site.

“WhatWasThere”: An interactive street-level mapping program

WhatWasThere

What is it? It is a virtual interactive street-level mapping program that enables users to upload photographs of any geographic area.  The idea is to be able to see a locality over time through photographs.  All you need to know about the photograph to upload it is the location and the year.

Who produces it? "WhatWasThere" was created in Ann Arbor, Michigan by Enlighten Ventures, LLC.

Why should you check it out? It is a great way to study architecture and the built environment over time.  "WhatWasThere" uses Google Maps as the base map onto which photos can be applied.  Los Angeles has 56 photos, with the earliest going back to the 1880's.

Is the content licensed or freely available? Access is freely available.

"PLACES AND PERCEPTIONS: SPACE AND IDENTITY IN INNER EURASIA"
Saturday, April 9, 2011 at Columbia University in New York City. Our conference seeks to bring together scholars from a variety of disciplines who are interested in the perception of place in different
epochs of Eurasian history and culture. We hope to examine the meanings that have been attached to spaces across the Eurasian steppe and neighboring regions from a wide range of methodological perspectives and to investigate the uses of spatial theory in the contemporary study of inner Eurasia.
Possible topics may include, but are not limited to:
• the role of space in the development of Eurasian states and empires; • the management of space among given communities, either settled or nomadic;• the textual representation of Eurasian spaces in and over time (in state-sponsored cultural products, the media, Western scholarship, travelers'
narratives, etc.)• the role of symbolic and/or physical locales within Eurasia;
• Eurasian identities (e.g. pan-Turkism) that have stretched across space and borders;• Eurasian regionalisms;• Eurasian cyberspace, public space;• urban planning and architecture in Eurasia;
• the roles of monuments and historic sites in national, local, imperial identities;• networks (e.g. railroads, trade) that have connected Eurasian spaces; • the effect of missionaries, industrialization, modernity, etc. on the development of spatial identity;• the role of natural landscapes (the steppe, the desert, the mountains, etc.) in various Eurasian cultures; • "place-making" and space as narrative of personal memories and collective histories;• ideas of home/displacement and belonging (or not) in a Eurasian space;• competition between states and powers for a given territory; • the interplay among different Eurasian linguistic groups across space; • the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in Eurasia;• "inner Eurasia," "Central Asia," "Mongolia," etc. as geographical concepts;• Orientalisms, colonialisms, "imaginary geographies" in Eurasia;• the role of social and spatial borders in Eurasia; • the role of geopolitics, globalization, transnational movement in
inner Eurasia;• the methodological uses of spatial theories in the study of Eurasia.

We particularly encourage submissions from graduate students who work in Central Asian, Mongolian, Russian, Middle Eastern, Chinese or South Asian fields, whatever their home departments (Anthropology, Archaeology, East Asian Languages and Cultures, Geography, History, Middle Eastern Studies, Political Science, Sociology, Slavic languages and Literatures, etc.).

The Dalai Lama at UCLA on May 2, 2011

Readers, I must admit that I am influenced in part by Tibetan and Mongolian Tantric Buddhism and its rituals and prayers. Although apolitical in my outlook, I generally tend to believe in Nirvana and I wanted you to know that His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will be visiting at UCLA. Of course, one just has to see the business side of the deal, where the tickets are priced from $165 per person and to $20 for being a student at the UCLA. Not to offend anyone but does the Dalai Lama know that to see him one has to pay??? Has Tantric Buddhism become a business?

However, I strongly believe that a large part of the proceeds that this event would generate will be earmarked for the 14th Dalai Lama Endowment on the UCLA Campus.

In order to address an increasing need for Tibetan Reference and other print materials, I have created a guide for Tibetan Studies Collections at UCLA.

Belarus-Literary Prize-Гліняны Вялес

I wanted to introduce my readers to Byelorussian or Belorussian Literary Prize entitled, "Гліняны Вялес" or "Gliniany Viales". The prize was founded in 1993 by the Union of Independent Writers. The name of the prize is symbolic of the "intention" of the founders. The prize was not supposed to be made of golden or crystal trophies, but simply of clay velez.

Nasha Niva, a Belorussian Newspaper reports that Уладзімір Някляеў (Vladimir Niaklieau) has been declared the winner of 2011 literary prize.

A wikipedia article provides a brief synopsis about the importance of this article.

Полное Собрание Законов о Российской Империи-Digitized by Russian National Library

The Russian National Library also has digitized a complete set of the laws of Russian Empire (Polnoe Sobranie Zaknov o Rossiiskoi Imperii). One unique feature of this open-access resources is its enhanced search capabilities. One can search the collection by keywords, by the last names as well as using the time periods.

The project self-description can be found here. And the subject thesaurus can be found here.

Belarusian Opposition Blog? or The Office for Anti-Propaganda?

As someone who spent many formative years of my life in Minsk, Slonim and Diatlovo, Belarus remains my second home. I as a professional librarian do not usually take sides when I provide information to my readers. However, one of my colleagues from Belarus brought this site to my attention and after some thought; I have decided to present it to my readers.

Belarus forever constitutes an integral part of my "dusha" and the land and its people remain dear to me even after 21 years of absence from the local scene. The site has interesting videos-testimonies that can be watched online. I sincerely hope that Bat'ka does not take this personally. The site's self-description is below:

Self Description:

The Office for Anti-Propaganda was founded in 2007 in Frankfurt. The "Office" produces an archive of videos, texts and picture material on the subject of political
propaganda. The focus is on Belarus because but its political model can be transferred to some other East European and Latin American countries from which Belarus gets political
support. Belarus is also an outstanding example of how to establish a modern dictatorship and how the western democracies handle this "problem".The Office for Anti-Propaganda" is the result of long-standing work in gathering and archiving the original propaganda material and the works of the artists. It is shown in the form of an installation with an archive, which every viewer can use: select and watch the videos, read correspondence between the office and German authorities, or
page through the original Belorussian "patriotic" ideological literature.
