The Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative Released
The Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative (FADGI) has now released an update and redesign of the website, available at: http://www.digitizationguidelines.gov/. In addition to improved navigation throughout, it is now easier to access the major document outlining best practices, the "Technical Guidelines for Digitizing Cultural Heritage materials" (http://www.digitizationguidelines.gov/guidelines/digitize-technical.html ). There are currently 15 federal agencies actively involved in this initiative, the most recent to join was the National Park Service. Other interested agencies are welcome to contact us for information on participating in the initiative.
FADGI is divided into two working groups, "Still Image" and "Audio Visual", with documentation, presentations, and publications relevant to each. In addition, there is a comprehensive glossary of over 200 digitization-related terms available on the site (http://www.digitizationguidelines.gov/glossary.php )
Since the site's launching in 2007, there have been several sub-groups formed to focus on key areas such as metadata issues, archival color, and recorded sound and moving image. The site will be updated on a regular basis to reflect new documents and activity.

William Skinner Map Collection Online Resource
G. William Skinner Map Collection
http://content.lib.washington.edu/skinnerweb/
Professor G. William Skinner of the University of Washington was a major
theorist of family systems and of spatial social science. Professor
Skinner's maps are products of his "lifelong interest in the spatial
distribution of social variables." His maps document subjects such as
agrarian China, 19th century France, and Japan.
Some of the variables he was
most interested in included agricultural wages, fertility rates, and the sex
ratio in various regions.
This remarkable digital collection from the
University of Washington Libraries brings together all 1200 maps from the
Skinner Collection. Visitors can browse the maps by country and region,
subject, or theme. The site also includes several documents by Professor
Skinner on his work dealing with hierarchical regional space and a complete
list of all the publications related to this work.

Germany Under Reconstruction (University of Wisconsin Digital Collections)
Site Description: The Germany Under Reconstruction digital collection provides a varied selection of publications in both English and German from the period immediately following World War II. Many are publications of the U.S. occupying forces, including reports and descriptions of efforts to introduce U.S.-style democracy to Germany. Some of the other books and documents describe conditions in a country devastated by years of war, efforts at political, economic and cultural development, and the differing perspectives coming from the U.S. and British zones and the Russian zone of occupation. At the same time, the Germans themselves and the occupying forces look back at the National Socialist period and try to come to terms with what had happened.
Polish Literary Prize- Nike (Nagroda Literacka)
Second in my series postings about various literary prizes in Eastern Europe stands the famous literary prize for Polish literature from Poland- The Nike Prize. The prize's name is derived from Nagroda Literacka.
This prize is administered by Fundacja Nagrody Literackiej NIKE and a href="http://wyborcza.pl/0,0.html">Gazeta Wyborcza is the sponsor for it.
Self-Description in English: NIKE is a prize for his book of the year. Is awarded annually in October for the best book of the previous year. Awards aim is to promote Polish literature, with emphasis on the novel.
The winner for 2010, Nike prize was a work “Nasza klasa” (“Our Class”) that was authored by Tadeusz Słobodziank
The title of the book is the same as the Polish social networking site Nasza Klasa. However the book itself is about the World War II experiences and has nothing to do with Polish "Facebook". According to the news as reported on the site of the museum of the history of Polish Jews, "Nasza klasa, published by słowo / obraz/ terytoria, is a drama describing the tragic stories of people who at first lived next to each other, and then started killing themselves. It is not a text with a thesis prepared in advance and the director transposing it on stage will have to reject easy, binary oppositions and search for the existential experience of the times of the Second World War."
We have ordered this book for our scholars at the library.
China Biographical Database at Harvard!
Although not a part of Eastern European cultural experience, the relevant political experience of China under the Communist rule was one factor that has influenced my decision to post some information about Harvard's China Biographical Database.
Self-Description: The China Biographical Database is an online relational database with biographical information about approximately 93000 individuals as of September 2010, primarily from the seventh through nineteenth centuries. The data is meant to be useful for statistical, social network, and spatial analysis as well as serving as a kind of biographical reference.
The long term goal of CBDB is systematically to include all significant biographical material from China’s historical record and to make the contents available free of charge, without restriction, for academic use. That data is regularly being enriched and new biographical entries are being created for Tang, Five Dynasties, Liao, Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing figures.
