Russian Satirical Journals at U Wisconsin-Madison

Dear Readers,

I wanted to bring to your attention an interesting digitization project that has been completed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The project is titled, "Russian Satirical Journals".

This project's self-description is as follows, "This digital collection represents a subset of the paper holdings of early 20th-century Russian political and satirical journals held in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries in the Department of Special Collections. These journals are, for the most part, representative of political and satirical journals published during the small window of relative press freedom which existed in Russia from the Imperial Decree (Ukaz) on the press issued on November 24th (Old Style), 1905 until new stricter press regulations were issued on March 18th (Old Style), 1906. A few of the items such as Krasnobai and Kolo-kol'chik are difficult to date precisely, and a few items such as Nakanune, Obryv and Proselok represent publications which come from the period following the new March 18th, 1906 regulations."

There are 23 different Russian satirical journal titles that can be found online at http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/EastEurope/EastEurope-idx?type=browse&scope=EASTEUROPE.RUSSATJOU

CFP: "Conflict as an Instrument in Internal Political Struggles: Secession Crises in the Post-Soviet Area"

"Conflict as an Instrument in Internal Political Struggles: Secession Crises in the Post-Soviet Area"

December 2-4, 2010
Humboldt-Universitët zu Berlin
Department of Social Sciences

In the framework of a DAAD Project on "conflict solution in Azerbaijan and Moldova" at the Department of Social Sciences of Humboldt-Universitët zu Berlin we are inviting submissions for a conference on the topic "Conflict as an instrument in internal political struggles and secession crises in the post-Soviet area". The conference will be a significant step for researchers from the region, Germany and other countries to establish new collaborative links and networks across countries.

Deadline for submission of the abstracts is July 15, 2010.

We welcome contributions focusing on the following topics:
Secession crises in post-Soviet states were shaped by heterogeneous dependencies and have different cause-effect relations. Most research on this topic is from an external perspective. This conference will focus on the internal perspective - the impact these conflicts have on
the political regimes, political institutions, on the economy, the political culture, the society, and the process of consolidation. With the particular emphasis on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict we will deal with the directly involved states of Armenia and Azerbaijan and the relations between both countries.

But also a comparative view on other conflicts like Abkhazia, Transnistria and South-Ossetia and the political systems of the involved countries seems to be worthwhile especially because of the
wide differences concerning the initial situation, the course of conflict, and the actors involved in these conflicts.  The international dimension will be considered only in so far as the engagement of external actors played an important role during the numerous attempts towards a permanent establishment of peace.  Primarily the conference will be devoted to the societal, political and economic impacts of these conflicts on the affected countries: to what extent can these conflicts be regarded as inheritances from the Soviet era, thus a special type of "post-colonial dispute"? What kind of impact do these unsolved issues have on the political development and the economic perspectives on (of) the countries involved? To what extent can the setbacks in the process of democratization be explained as a consequence of these (ethnic) conflicts? In this way the full range and the complexity of these actually not so frozen conflicts in the post-Soviet area will be illustrated.

Apart from the country examples we also welcome contributions with more theoretical approaches for the analysis of these conflict situations. The main focus of the submitted abstracts should be the direct relation between the use and influence of secession crises in internal political struggles.

We especially encourage young researchers to submit their proposals.  Abstracts must be no longer than 500 words and should be submitted by email to romy.werner@cms.hu-berlin.de until July 15, 2010.

Workshop for young researchers within the framework of the conference a workshop will take place for young postgraduates. Students and doctoral candidates are able to prepare themselves for the following conference and discuss preliminary outcomes and research questions.

It is also intended to help graduate-level research students to overcome the academic isolation associated with PhD research, to "try" their ideas and findings on wider audiences, and to establish new collaborative links across countries.

Abstracts should indicate the academic significance of the topic, relevance of conceptual literature, and analytical structure. In addition to the proposal (no longer than 500 words), applicants will be expected to provide a short statement of support from their supervisor (no more than 300 words) and a CV. Completed submissions can be made by email only to: romy.werner@cms.hu-berlin.de

Interested persons can also enroll by contacting romy.werner@cms.hu-berlin.de

Archival Sources on History of Russia-Polar Bear Project

The following project caught my attention as during the Soviet times considerable attention was paid to an invastion by the ANTANTY of fragile Soviet Russia. At the University of Michigan's Bentley Historical Library there is an interesting digitization project going on. The project website describes it as "American Intervention in Northern Russia, 1918-1919," nicknamed the "Polar Bear Expedition," was a U.S. military intervention in northern Russia at the end of World War I. Since many of these soldiers originated from Michigan, the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan, an archive documenting Michigan history, has collected materials related to this event since the 1960s. The Bentley has amassed one of the largest groups of materials on this topic, consisting of over sixty individual collections of primary source material as well as numerous published materials."(http://polarbears.si.umich.edu/index.pl?node_id=272&lastnode_id=7237)

Trafficking in Persons Report 2010

"Secretary Clinton (June 14, 2010): "The 10th annual Trafficking in Persons Report outlines the continuing challenges across the globe, including in the United States. The Report, for the first time, includes a ranking of the United States based on the same standards to which we hold other countries. The United States takes its first-ever ranking not as a reprieve but as a responsibility to strengthen global efforts against modern slavery, including those within America. This human rights abuse is universal, and no one should claim immunity from its reach or from the responsibility to confront it." (Source: http://www.state.gov/g/tip/rls/tiprpt/2010/index.htm)

Europeana Publishes First White Paper: Knowledge = Information In Context

Europeana is proud to announce its first White Paper: a look at the key role linked data will play in Europeana’s development and in helping Europe’s citizens make connections between existing knowledge to achieve new cultural and scientific advances.

Linked data gives machines the ability to make associations and put search terms into context. Without it, Europeana could be seen as a simple collection of digital objects. With linked data, the potential is far greater, as the author of the white paper, Prof. Stefan Gradmann, explains.

He uses an example from the experimental Thought Lab to show how a search for ‘Paris’ intuitively leads to connected concepts like items in the Louvre, a Paris-based institution. It also gives the option to see paintings portraying people named Paris, such as the Greek prince, who abducted of Helen of Troy. From there, more links point the way to topics like the ‘myth of Paris’ or the mythical Apple of Discord – a golden apple that sparked a dispute and eventually led to the Trojan War – and then on to the forbidden apple eaten by Adam and Eve.

This is just one example of how linked data will allow Europeana to propose connections between millions of items from Europe’s heritage. These connections can then be used to generate new ideas and knowledge, on a scale not possible before.

“Strange as it may seem, this is the way lots of original artwork is conceived: through mental operations based on shifts of meaning, connotation and personal association,” says Prof. Gradmann, an expert in semantic technology, a professor for Library and Information Science at Humboldt University in Berlin and someone heavily involved in the building of Europeana.

Prof. Gradmann places this advanced search technology at the heart of Europeana’s purpose.

“One of Europeana’s main roles should be to help Europe’s citizens create a new era of knowledge from our shared culture and history.”

The publication of the White Paper follows the recent release of another key document from Europeana, the Public Domain Charter. The Charter emphasises the importance of preserving and keeping the Public Domain accessible to those who own it: the public.

Notes for editors:

Europeana.eu is a website that links you to cultural and scientific material from Europe’s libraries, museums, audio-visual collections and archives. Launched as a prototype in November 2008, it offers access to over 7 million digitised items. Europeana’s fully operational service will launch later in 2010, giving access to 10 million items.
