CALL FOR PAPERS

The annual conference of the Canadian Association of Slavists will take place in Montreal, Quebec on May 28-30, 2010 as part of the Congress of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The theme of the 2010 Congress is CONNECTED UNDERSTANDING/LE SAVOIR BRANCHÉ.

Proposals are invited for individual papers, panels, and roundtable discussions.  Proposals for complete panels are preferred. Please follow abstract specifications when submitting your proposal(s).  Forms for individual papers, panels and roundtables as well as a brief CV form are available at

We particularly want to encourage young scholars and graduate students to participate in this conference. Deadline for individual paper proposals:  30 January 2009; for panels and roundtables 15 February 2010. Notification of the Program Committee's decisions will be sent out by 1 March 2009.

To apply for participation in the conference, please fill out the respective forms (CV and individual paper proposal form; roundtable proposal form and/or panel proposal form). Abstracts should not exceed 400 words. Please use MS Word for Windows and Times New Roman or MS Word for Apple and TimesCE or pure Unicode text. Make sure to use the Library of Congress transliteration system to render words in a Cyrillic alphabet. Your abstract should present a research question and outline your plan for investigating this scholarly problem. Each abstract will be reviewed by the Program Committee. Harvard's Islamic Heritage Project Is Now Online

 

An Innovative Collaboration Preserves Key Islamic Materials and Makes Them Accessible to Internet Users Everywhere

 

Through a new collaboration among Islamic-studies scholars, librarians, and curators, Harvard University has cataloged, conserved, and digitized Islamic manuscripts, maps, and published texts from its renowned library and museum collections. The result is a new online collection comprising more than 145,000 digital pages available to Internet users everywhere. Entitled the Islamic Heritage Project, or IHP, the collection is made possible with generous support from Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal.

The Islamic Heritage Project is an integral part of the University's Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Islamic Studies Program (ISP). Founded in 2006, ISP builds on Harvard's strong commitment to the study of the religious traditions of the world, and it augments the University's existing strength by increasing the number of faculty focused on Islamic studies. ISP created the Islamic Heritage Project in collaboration with the Harvard University Library Open Collections Program (OCP) to share important aspects of the University's intellectual wealth—specifically by developing a dynamic digital collection that supports teaching and research.

The IHP collaboration is a unique initiative that identifies, preserves, and digitizes historically significant Islamic materials and makes the resulting images available on the Internet. IHP includes over 260 manuscripts, 270 printed texts, and 50 maps selected by Harvard's distinguished faculty in consultation with bibliographers, librarians, and museum curators. On a case-by-case basis, every item was reviewed and cataloged—and, in many cases given careful conservation treatment—by conservators in the University Library's Weissman Preservation Center.

To create the online collection itself, the OCP project team produced digital copies of more than 145,000 pages that are now web-accessible."Through the generosity of Prince Alwaleed," notes William A. Graham, Albertson Professor of Middle Eastern Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Divinity, "Harvard is actively sharing parts of its rich library holdings for the benefit of the worldwide community of scholars of Islam. With the Islamic Heritage Project now launched, any Internet user can locate often unique primary and secondary resources in Harvard collections, access them on the web, and incorporate them into teaching and research."

 

Today, IHP users can search or browse complete reproductions of Islamic manuscripts and published texts that date from the 13th to the 20th centuries CE and represent many

·         regions, including Saudi Arabia, North Africa, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and South, Southeast, and Central Asia;

·         languages, primarily Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman Turkish; also Urdu, Chagatai, Malay, Gujarati, Indic languages, and several Western languages; and

·         subjects, including religious texts and commentaries, Sufism, history, geography, law, and the sciences (astronomy, astrology, mathematics, medicine); poetry and literature; rhetoric, logic, and philosophy; calligraphy, dictionaries and grammar, as well as biographies and autobiographical works.

Users can browse three basic genres—published materials, manuscripts, and maps—or search catalog records that detail the full IHP collection. A virtual keyboard allows users to enter queries and search terms in Arabic.

2009: Music from Kazakh/Qazaqstan- Part VI and Part VII

Dear Readers,


I must apologize for my long silence, but now that the UCLA Library is closed for the Winter Holidays, I will have some more time to post interesting clips of Qazaq Pop Music for my readers. I like Qazaq Popular music for several reasons. First, Qazaqstani artists are experimenting with various forms of art that was considered "Western" under the regularized Soviet normatives. Second, it has been twenty years since the Communist states of Europe began to disappear from the map, and it is interesting to see how the Central Asian states began to pick up the life from the pieces of the Soviet State and move on. These two songs show us to diametrically opposite trends that often plague us as humans. First, to look into the future and then to look back in the past. The questions, I ask is as follows: Do we exist at the intersections of the past and the future? What is our present?


The first clip is by Zhadyra Kutpanova titled Suyem Seni= Жадыра Кутпанова - Суйем Сенi





The second clip depicts a woman in a traditional Qazaq dress. She longs for the "idealized" and "santizied" Qazaq past that is dreamlike. Although, not a reflection of reality, this clip, does give all of us hope and teaches us to dream.


The song is title Aulym Anim by Makpal Dixanbaeyva = Макпал Диханбаева - Ауылым Анiм. The title can be translated as the village or aul of my mother

American Friends of Russian Folklore Scholarship

American Friends of Russian Folklore is offering a scholarship to join next summer's folklore expedition to the Don Cossacks of Volgograd Province, Russia. Dates of the expedition are June 1 to June 13, 2010.  The scholarship is open to any US citizen, 18 or over, with an interest in Russian folklore. Russian-language skills are helpful but not required.

The theme for the 2010 issue is “The State of the Field.”

We invite submissions of Bibliographies, Bibliographic Essays, Historiographic Essays and Collection Review Essays that examine the state of research and/or research materials on any aspect of Russian-Jewish History and Culture.

Winter 2010 Intensive Russian Language Course in Sankt Petersburg

The Nevsky Institute of Language and Culture (Saint-Petersburg, Russia) is pleased to announce a winter course of Russian language. This course is an intensive one and designed for participants who have already reached Upper-Intermediate or Proficiency level of Russian. Background

Following the approval of the UNIFEM corporate Strategic Plan for 2008-2011, regional and sub-regional strategic plans and frameworks were developed by the respective geographical units, and entered into effect upon signature by the UNIFEM Executive Director.

Under the Regional Strategic Plan for the CEE/CIS for 2009-2012, UNIFEM is focusing on improving accountability to women's economic, political and personal security and rights by increasing the gender-responsiveness of national and sectoral development strategies, plans and budgets; in the reviews and revisions of constitutions, labour laws and labour migration legislation and agreements; by ensuring women's rights and security in the reforms of the sectors of security, land and agriculture, and social protection; by strengthening both, the gender-responsiveness of and women's informed participation in governance processes including peace-building and conflict resolution; and in addressing HIV/AIDs and the elimination of violence against women.

These commitments under Strategic Plan are developed into specific programmes and project documents through close consultations with partners, as well as on-going work of Sub-regional and project offices.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall direction of the Section Chief, the direct supervision of the Section's Programme Specialist and in close cooperation with the Sub-regional Offices in the CEE and the CIS, the Consultant will be in charge of coordinating the development of project documents and proposals, as well as their implementation.

Project Development, Management and Implementation in compliance with UNDP/UNIFEM rules, regulations and procedures:

1. Based on the consultations and inputs of the programme staff in sub-regional and project offices, coordinate the development and approval of programme documents
   
2. Prepare, implementation and/or monitor implementation of annual results-based work plans and frameworks as endorsed by the Section
   
3. Coordinate project activities with all partners, internal and external;
   
4. Ensure technical soundness of programme activities, achievement of outputs and outcomes and quality and cost effectiveness;
   
5. Ensure the highest UNIFEM standards in the provision of technical and advisory inputs, organization of workshops, seminars, training and delivery of other outputs as needed;
   
6. Prepare all necessary reports substantive and financial reports, including internal UNIFEM and external to donors and partners as needed, and ensure the programmes are well reflected in UNIFEM internal and external reports, including through participation in thematic and corporate meetings
   
7. Ensure information sharing and coordination between all parties and partners Field-HQ; GEO/Advisors; Inter and IIntra-Regional and Global; with UN and other partners and donors; etc.
   

Information and Knowledge Management:

1. Ensure the programmes are designed and implementation plans developed in a manner that will ensure methods, approaches and results are well-documented thus enabling the process of knowledge management and production from the onset of the work;
   
2. Set-up baselines and indicators at onset of the programmes in line with UNFIEM's corporate guidance, and track results and indicators including through the new UNIFEM systems being set up;
   
3. Plan, organize and implement all information and knowledge management aspects of these programmes
   
4. Promote a learning environment and systematic information sharing within the project team;Prepare substantive documentation and reports as needed.
   

Partnerships and Resources:

1. Provide inputs as necessary and/or required by the Section Chief towards ensuring quality control and results
   
2. Build and maintain strong relationships with a range of key actors, especially intergovernmental and non-governmental regional organizations in CEE CIS region
   
3. Establish, develop and maintain mutually beneficial strategic partnerships with NGOs and community groups, the press and media, the business sector, the education sector etc; Monitor financial resources to ensure accuracy and reliability of financial reporting
   
4. Support the Section Chief 's fundraising efforts for the three
   programmes through research, information, reports and other inputs required.
   

Competencies

1. Ability to work independently and in a team, to remain constructive and good humored, even under pressure;
   
2. Ability to set priorities, produce quality outputs, meet deadlines and manage time efficiently;
   
3. Demonstrated initiative and sound judgment;
   
4. Demonstrated understanding and dedication to women's human rights and gender equality;
   
5. Dedication to the UN principles and ability to work harmoniously with persons of different nationalities and cultural background
   

Required Skills and Experience

1. Advanced degree in economics, law, public policy, development studies, gender studies, or similar;
   
2. A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience. Previous employment experience with international organizations is an asset as is previous work on gender equality, public policy and/or local development
   
3. Programme/project design and management skills;
   
4. Strong analytical, writing and communication skills in English and Russian (preferably);
   
5. Strong computer skills.

In Memoriam: Vycheslav Tikhonov

Скончался Народный артист СССР Вячеслав Тихонов, сообщает телеканал "Вести-24".

В.Тихонов скончался в пятницу в Москве на 82-м году жизни. Ранее он был прооперирован и находился в тяжелом состоянии.

В.Тихонов родился 8 февраля 1928 года в городе Павловском Посаде Московской области.

В возрасте 13 лет пошёл в ремесленное училище, где учился на токаря. После этого поступил на военный завод, где работал по полученной специальности.

В 1944 году он поступил на нулевой курс Автомеханического института. Но ближе к 1945 году у него возникла идея попытать счастье во ВГИКе. Там его сначала не приняли, однако уже после завершения вступительных экзаменов профессор Б.В.Бибиков зачислил В.Тихонова к себе на курс. В годы учёбы во ВГИКе состоялся его актёрский дебют в фильме Сергея Герасимова "Молодая гвардия", где он сыграл роль Володи Осьмухина.

В 1950 году В.Тихонов с отличием окончил ВГИК.

В 1957 году на киноэкраны вышел фильм Станислава Ростоцкого "Дело было в Пенькове". Вячеслав Тихонов сыграл роль тракториста Матвея Морозова. Эта роль принесла актёру зрительское признание.

После этих кинокартин В.Тихонову ему был предложен ряд значительных, разноплановых ролей в фильмах: "Майские звёзды" и "На семи ветрах", "Жажда", "Мичман Панин", "Две жизни", "Оптимистическая трагедия".

Во второй половине 1960-х годов актер сыграл роль Андрея Болконского в эпопее Сергея Бондарчука "Война и мир".

Он также сыграл в фильме "Доживём до понедельника". За работу в этой картине актеру в 1970 году была присуждена Государственная премия СССР.

В телесериале "Семнадцать мгновений весны" В.Тихонов сыграл роль Штирлица и в 1976 году он был награждён Государственной премией РСФСР имени братьев Васильевых.

В 2002 году у актёра случился инфаркт миокарда.

28 ноября 2009 года актёр был госпитализирован из-за проблем с сердцем.
