California Digital Library- New Acquisitions Update, June 2009

June 29, 2009

Following is a brief summary of the new consortial acquisitions by California Digital Library Program
CDL Acquisitions in FY 2008/2009

Archivision Digital Research Library - 28,000 images of art, architecture, gardens, parks and historic or contemporary sites from all over the world. The Visual Resources group has requested Archivision as their #1 priority for a number of years. Archivision is hosted on the ARTStor platform and is now available to all UC users.

LexisNexis Congressional Hearings Digital Collection Part A (1824-1979) -- Public policy starts and ends with Congressional committee hearings. In these hearings, Congressional committees assess, amend, approve or kill legislation, as well as oversee the implementation and effectiveness of previously enacted legislation falling under their jurisdiction. The LexisNexis Congressional Hearings Digital Collection forms an unparalleled documentary record of events and public policy issues faced by America, as well as the objectives and actions of Congress in dealing with these events and issues. In addition to responding to long-standing selector recommendations, this acquisition will also facilitate shared collection management initiatives for government documents.

San Francisco Chronicle , 1865-1922 (ProQuest) - Founded by two brothers in 1865 when the West was still wild, the San Francisco Chronicle covers the completion of the transcontinental railroad, the Klondike gold rush, the S.F. earthquake and fire of 1906, America's entry into World War I, and the many events that shaped the San Francisco Bay region. The Historic S.F. Chronicle can be cross searched with the Historical Los Angeles Times (an earlier CDL purchase) for complete historical coverage of the State of California.

African Writers Series (ProQuest) -- The Heinemann's African Writers Series includes seminal works from the canon of African literature of the 20th century: influential stories, drama, poetry, author biographies and literary works from notable authors such as Nelson Mandela and Nadine Gordimer.

The next four resources were purchased from Alexander Street Press, an independent publisher of highly acclaimed and unique digital collections.

Latin American Women Writers - A collection of over 100,000 pages of literature by Latin American women from the colonial period in the 17th century forward to the present. Latin America and its literary culture encompass twenty diverse countries, each with its unique voice and struggle for independence after the end of colonization. The collection includes memoirs, essays and literature in the original language of the writers.

North American Theatre Online - More than 40,000 pages of critical, in-copyright reference works about authors, plays, theatres, productions, production companies, casts and related information covering the world of theatre from colonial times to the present. This reference collection includes upgrades to CDL's previously purchased Black Drama (Vol. 2 upgrade) and Twentieth Century North American Drama as well as a new resource, North American Indian Drama.

Theatre in Video - Theatre in Video contains over 250 of the world's most important 20th century plays together with over 100 video documentaries, including the BBC Shakespeare Series, delivered in streaming video. When using Theatre in Video together with North American Theatre Online, students will be able to find the complete performance of a play in streaming video, its full text, production background, reference materials and related ephemera.

Women and Social Movements in the United States: 1600 to 2000 -- CDL originally purchased this award-winning collection in 2005 and we are now upgrading to the Scholar's Edition, featuring 75,000 additional pages of scholarly material about women's activism in public life since 1963.

The first North American Edition of Ruslan-Russian 1 Textbook Announced

Russia Online, Inc. is proud to announce the first North American edition of Ruslan Russian 1 textbook and workbook (beginner's level). The Ruslan series, first published in the UK, is the leading textbook for the communicative approach to teaching Russian in the United Kingdom. Ruslan has been published in translation in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Sweden. Previously available only as an import, this course has been revised and edited to meet North American academic standards. Russia Online collaborated with the English author and a contributor here in Washington DC to make sure the course book is interesting and relevant to beginner students of Russian in the United States and Canada. To date, the Ruslan course has been used with great success in high schools, universities and with the US Government.
Ruslan 1 was created by teachers in the UK with years of experience teaching both adults and young people. The course maximizes the enjoyment of learning a new language, while giving a thorough grammatical and structural introduction in a communicative context. The course can be used by people learning in groups with a teacher, and there are a large number of group activities and language games. The series is also useful to self-learners, especially when used with the Russian 1 Workbook, or the Ruslan 1 interactive CDROM. The approach is practical and communicative, with up-to-date, useful language, thoroughly vetted by Russian teachers living in Russia, and by Russian Language instructors at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the US Department of Commerce (DOC).
Currently the Ruslan Russian 1 communicative Russian course and the supplementary Workbook (both include audio CDs with dialogs) are available.  Work has begun on preparing the second level textbook and workbook.
Teachers, who would like to receive an examination copy, please contact Ms Elena Rakhaeva.  Telephone: 301-933-0607, Email: Elena@russia-on-line.com. You can also download the first lesson free of charge from www.ruslan.co.uk/demos.htm

Call for Papers: NeMLA (Northeast Modern Language Association) Convention, April 7-11, 2010 Montreal, Quebec - Hilton Bonaventure

Panel Title: Russian Women Writers: New Views

This panel invites examinations of 18th-21st century Russian women writers in the present critical environment. Send 250-word abstracts to diana.greene@nyu.edu by Sept. 30, 2009.

Panel description:

A post post modernist cultural climate has re-energized feminist criticism. Those who are interested in the specificities of women's writing are now less likely to be labeled essentialists, while being able to take advantage of both the theoretical concepts of post modernism, post colonialism, queer theory, gender studies, and also those of earlier feminist criticism. This new, rich critical environment is particularly useful for examining women's writing of Russia a country that has been described as self-colonized (Dragan Kujundzic) and in which gender has been constructed somewhat differently from a generically definedWest (Irina Savkina). This session is intended to inspire new interpretative strategies and interpretations of the works of canonical and noncanonical 18th-21st century Russian women writers.

Some possible questions: How have works of Russian women writers been influenced by Western thinking and feminism of various periods? How have Russian women writers resisted such influences? How are the specifics of gender construction in various periods of Russian history reflected in the work of Russian women writers? How do Russian women writers respond to each other? To the concept of women's writing? Should concepts of periodization, national literature, gender and genre be problematized in discussions of writing by women?

Deadline: September 30, 2009

Please include with your abstract:

The Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) and the London College of Fashion announce the photographic archives of Gala, Miner’s and Crystal-three prominent cosmetic companies of WWII era!

The Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) and the London College of Fashion announced a collaboration today that will see the photographic archives of three important cosmetics companies made accessible online for the first time.

The archives of Gala, Miner's and Crystal, three prominent cosmetics companies operating during and after the Second World War, are held at London College of Fashion and have been digitized and made freely accessible through the VADS website.
The archives are a valuable resource for the study of the history of cosmetics, advertising photography, fashion promotion and women in the Second World War.

During the War when silk was needed for parachutes and stockings disappeared from the shops, Miner's had particular success with its leg make-up, Miners Liquid Stockings, which many women used to paint their legs and even drew black lines down the back of their legs to simulate the seams.  Gala of London was also the first company to introduce lip stick in a tube when they introduced their lipline in 1957.

Katherine Baird, Manager of Archives and Special Collections at the London College of Fashion said: "The history of cosmetics is a subject area poorly served by archives to date, and this archive is a valuable addition."

"The war and immediate aftermath, was an important period for the development of package design and also for the development of women's economic independence and consequently their image. The photographs in this collection provide a rich resource charting the development of designs and promotion of cosmetic products and images of women using them."

Leigh Garrett, Director of VADS, said "We are delighted to have worked with London College of Fashion to make these unique archives accessible to a wider learning community than ever before."

"Through our partnerships with university and museum collections across the UK, VADS has already made a wide range of visual arts image collections available online freely for educational use.  This latest project will bring another valuable collection to wider recognition and use by scholars, researchers and students as well as members of the public."

The three cosmetics archives have been digitised by the London College of Fashion and made available online through the 'Enhancing VADS' project, funded as part of the Enriching Digital Resources programme from JISC.

The collection is available at http://www.vads.ac.uk/collections/LCFGALA

For up to date information on forthcoming workshops and free visits please see the online ARLIS/UK & Ireland Events Calendar 2008 at

California Budget Crisis and the University of California: A Letter from President Yudoff

On June 17th, UC Systemwide President Mark G. Yudoff's letter was released outlining the response to impending financial crisis in our Golden State. I really appreciated the candid tone and honest information value of his letter. I really was impressed by the transparency that exudes from this important policy document.

However, I usually do not use this precious blog space to cry about our problems on either the local, state or national levels. I try to be pragmatic and resolute that every market will eventually turn around. However, I do like to analyze amorphous language of many policy statements that project a sort of vagueness and openness of interpretation. English is indeed not my first nor my second language so I do feel handicap sometimes when trying to analyze these important documents. It is not my job to interpret the text for the readers but to see how the words get used to construct meanings. Below is the hyperlink to June 17th letter. This letter of course is not classified in any sense, but it does hold some extremely interesting discourse. Let us analyze only the part of it.

The document is labled 0906 reduction info.

Here is an interesting example of vagueness and word choice. Let us look at the second page and the beginning of the second paragraph.

The questions that arise from a sentence below are many. Let us look at the sentence itself, "Certain bonus and incentive programs were canceled or deferred".- My questions- What are these programs? What does it meant by the word certain? What does the word defer means when we all are asked to take somewhere from 4 to 8% of salary cut as one of many options.

The continuation is as follows- "the staff merit pool for FY 2008-09 was eliminated". How do we interpret this sentence? What does this exactly mean? To eliminate has been lately used in differing contexts. Here perhaps it simply means that there will not be any merit increases this year, but does this mean that these increases will be given on retroactive basis once the budgetary scenarios (multiple of them) improve?

The last sentence is typically formulaic expression of a gesture of good will.."With best wishes, I am,..Sincerely your's". I liked this ending because it sounds very optimistic. I really am grateful to UC (UC means University of California not You see)for the learning opportunity that it has provided me for all these important years. I have come to appreciate our wonderful university system and will do my best to help others to get through these pending hard times..Where are the Happy Days, is the question???

I apologize for posting my personal opinion and internal dialog here for cultural consumption, but I simply wanted to examine the discourse that usually some of the policy documents contain. This letter is very informative and ends with the positive tone..So I pray in a good way-So help me God!

белые розы шатунов and Nostalgia

Dear Readers,

I hope that you are not tired of my postings of Youtube videos here. I was looking at the Soviet Group called "Laskoviy Mai" and their song "Beliye Rozy". I decided to do search on this song in Youtube. I discovered two versions of same old Yurii Shatunov. First version was sung during the Soviet Times (in late 90s) and the other modern clip by the same singer. Look how times have changed somethings, but somethings seem to appear unchangeable. But is this true? Please judge for yourself. The law is everything changes all the time...

The Fifth Islamic Manuscript Conference, Cambridge 24-26 July 2009: ACCESS AND RIGHTS

http://www.islamicmanuscript.org/Conferences.html

The Islamic Manuscript Association is pleased to announce that the Fifth Islamic Manuscript Conference will be held at Christ's College, University of Cambridge, UK from 24-26 July 2009. It will be hosted by the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation and the Centre of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge. We invite you to register online at http://www.islamicmanuscript.org/conferences/ConferenceRegistrationForm1.html

In 2009, the Conference will specifically address the issue of access to manuscripts. Improving access to manuscripts through digitization and electronic ordering and delivery systems whilst ensuring their proper long-term preservation is fundamental to the successful future study of the Islamic heritage. Presently, technologies are available that have the potential to transform the way manuscripts are studied; however, the access these technologies can allow is counterbalanced by collection holders' concerns regarding their legal rights and the financial sustainability of their organisations. During the Fifth Islamic Manuscript Conference these vital issues will be discussed by our invited speakers and selected paper presenters.

As in previous years, the Conference will be organized around the Association's four main interest groups: cataloguing, conservation, digitization, and publishing and research. The first day will also feature two special panels, a 'Collections' panel introducing less well-known collections from Africa, the Balkans, and Turkey, and a panel devoted to the conference theme of Access featuring invited experts who will discuss how such issues as security in libraries and online, financial considerations, and the understanding of international copyright law inform users' experience of accessing materials for research.

Posters advertising the conference can be found at http://www.islamicmanuscript.org/conferences/Posters.html

TIMA would be most grateful if recipients of this email could display a poster in their institutions.

The full schedule will also be available online shortly. Please do also take a few moments to explore the new website and its improved format.

Call for papers for the 2010 NEMLA Montreal

NEMLA Montreal 2010 Conference

7-11 April 2010

Montreal, Canada

Call for papers for the 2010 NEMLA Montreal Conference for the following roundtable:

"Translation and Identity: Transforming the Personal toward the National and the Global"

Translation is often considered a utilitarian skills set, a one-way process of substitution or reproduction of written and oral expression. However, translation is also a creative and communicative process, where transformation and recognition of the self in its social relationships unfold within a greater national and/or global whole. While translation can emphasize the "differences" between the translated culture and that of the translator, translation as a communicative, two-way process can also foster an understanding of, and empathy between, the two. On a global scale, identification with the signs, symbols and traditions of disparate communities welcomes a cross-cultural dialogue that bridges international borders.

This roundtable session will explore translation as a transformative and creative process within personal, national and/or global contexts. We will discuss the role translation plays in the establishment of identity (one's own and that of the target culture/language), the enhancement of intercultural dialogue, and the promotion of mutual empathy through communicative performance, in-service learning and study abroad experiences, as well as textual translation. We will also examine the heightened role and new significance of translation within the ever changing global reality. We welcome a variety of perspectives and disciplines to this conversation, including, but not limited to, cultural and ethnic studies, linguistics, literature and gender studies.

Call for Papers: The Russian Cyberspace Journal

The Russian Cyberspace Journal invites contributions for its second issue From Comrades to Classmates:

Social Networks on the Russian Internet The deadline for submissions is 1 July 2009.

At the beginning of 2009, the Communist party of the Russian Federation had approximately 150,000 members, while there were over 20 million users of Odnoklassniki.ru, a social networking site for former "classmates". Russia's dominant political party, "United Russia,"

commands some 2 million members; however this pales in comparison to the

18 million active members of the popular networking platform Vkontakte.ru. While political activity in party organizations is certainly different from the spontaneous, informal, and often apolitical participation in social networks on the web, these comparisons demand inspection. Over the coming decade, sociologists predict a general shift from formal to informal organization of social groups and communities.

Undoubtedly, this shift will be shaped by contemporary networking technologies.

The issue aims to examine the structure, taxonomy, function, and significance of social networks on the Russian Internet. What role do these new web-based forms of socializing play in contemporary Russia, particularly given the paradoxical stereotypes of Russian society as collectivistic on the one hand, and amorphous and apathetic on the other? Does social networking in Russia represent a cultural form specific to post-Soviet Russia, or is it only an unreconstructed and uncritical adaptation of "Western" net practices?

The Russian Cyberspace Journal seeks contributions that approach social networks as a critical component of politics, society, culture, education, and economics. We are interested in exploring a number of questions, including: Have new social networks replicated and/or replaced Soviet traditions of social mobilisation? What is the role of social networks in maintaining Russia's regional integrity and binding together the widely-dispersed Russian- speaking diaspora? What can we learn about post-millennial everyday practices-dating, business associations, public relations-from the operation of Russian social networks?

    Guidelines

Text-based academic entries in English, German or Russian, and/or submissions in other genres, styles and form, reflecting the nature of the medium, by scholars, politicians, artists and cultural practitioners are welcome and will be considered for publication.

For more information, please visit

The Russian Cyberspace Journal is an online publication that appears twice per year. The issues are organized thematically, focusing on timely issues and topics related to the study of Russian, Eurasian and Central European new media. Articles from scholars from a variety of academic backgrounds as well as artists' contributions, interviews, book reviews, comments, and discussions are invited. The journal is published in three languages, English, German, and Russian. The journal is a multi-media platform, celebrating cyberspace as a variety of information flows. The journal editors and the advisory board are comprised of young but distinguished academics and net practitioners from across the globe.

Call for Proposals: The Socialist 1960s: Popular Culture and the Socialist City in Global Perspective

2010 Fisher Forum, Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, June 24-26, 2010

The 1960s witnessed an explosion of cross-cultural fertilization in a time of world competition for the hegemony of two enduring "systems" - capitalism and socialism. As a moment when decolonization created immense possibilities for liberation movements throughout the world, the 1960s became the heyday of the "Second World" appeals to the newly decolonized societies of the "Third World," as well as the reemergence of a European "First World" as a postwar consumer society in reaction to American hegemony. This was the moment when the "orderedness" of the three worlds was arguably the most prominent in popular discourse and culture, and a moment when that order was contested and destabilized. The patterns that first emerged in the 1960s - cultural contest, political mobility, urbanization and the rise of urban youth movements, women's rights, the hegemony of popular over "high" culture driven by technology - form the bases of today's discussions of globalization, its challenges, dangers, and contestation.

The purpose of this conference will be to use the Second World, the socialist societies of the 1960s, as the center from which to explore global interconnections and uncover new and perhaps surprising patterns of cultural cross-pollination. This forum will be structured around cities as the units of analysis, and it will focus on the arena of popular culture as played out in these city spaces. More specifically, we invite paper proposals that focus on one of three realms of urban popular culture - media (including cinema, television, popular music); material culture (including spaces and their uses as well as commodities), and leisure (including tourism and other activities). We consider these exemplary of the circulation of objects, images, sounds, and impressions on a level different from political programs, literature and "fine arts." Several thematic threads will tie together this consideration of the circulation of popular culture around and through the Second world: mobility and cultural transmission; youth cultures and student movements; gender; consumerism and hedonism; the state and cultural exchange; technology and cultural dissemination; cosmopolitan political mobilization. Our aims will be to consider what the "1960s" meant in socialist countries, and to discuss the balance in the 1960s between cultural global integration and continuing political differentiation.

The core of the forum will be the socialist societies of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, but the forum would be enriched by participation from scholars who study other socialist societies. We anticipate that the conference will result in a published volume: submissions should be original work, not previously published.

The conference organizers are Diane P. Koenker, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (dkoenker@illinois.edu) and Anne E. Gorsuch, University of British Columbia (gorsuch@interchange.ubc.ca). We welcome advance inquiries.

Please send proposed paper title and abstracts to each of the organizers by October 15, 2009. Proposals should indicate which of the conference themes the paper addresses, and the term "Sixties" or "1960s" should be explicit in the paper title. Selection of participants will be made by November 30, 2009, and conference papers should be submitted by April 1, 2010.

The Ralph and Ruth Fisher Forum is held in conjunction with the Summer Research Laboratory on Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. The conference is made possible by Mary and Hal Zirin's generous gift to the Ralph and Ruth Fisher Endowment Fund in honor of Professor Ralph Fisher and his wife Ruth. Ralph Fisher is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Illinois and founder of the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center and the Summer Research Lab.
