Russian National Anthem-Lyrics.

Slavic Languages Cataloguing Help

There are several useful web-sites that can help a librarian with Slavic Studies cataloging issues. One of the sites that I would highly recommend is titled Slavic Languages Cataloging at Indiana Univeristy. This site hosts Slavic Languages Cataloging Manual.

Another important work that was done in this area is Harmonization of Anglo-American and Russian Cataloging Rules. I also wanted to mention ALA-LC Romanization Tables that are used to transliterate words from non-Latin scripts to Latin script. The Library of Congress also has an online version of authorities file that can be very useful in determination of authorized headings.

My Favorite Singer from Russia: Anita Tsoi

Title: Panorama (© Anita Tsoi)Anita Tsoi is my favorite pop-singer for more than one reasons. She is Korean Russian. Her first song that I listened to was titled, "ПОЛЁТ". She has several new songs out. The song that I have posted using the Youtube (Web 2.0) technology is called "Panorama". The lyrics of this songs are below for the learners of Russian language.

Buryat National Anthem- Words and Sound File

Words of Buryat National Anthem

I also wanted to post here a sample of Buryat National Anthem so that visitors to this blog can get an idea about how the language sounds to those who have never heard it spoken. It is a rather large file and depending on your connection speed it may take some time for it to load. Patience is a virture. Thank you.

Library of Congress: Meeting of Frontiers Project

Meeting of Frontiers Project at the Library of Congress is an unique project of its kind that deals with digital learning objects about Russia and the United States. The description on the projects web-site is as follows, "About the Project
Meeting of Frontiers is a bilingual, multimedia English-Russian digital library that tells the story of the American exploration and settlement of the West, the parallel exploration and settlement of Siberia and the Russian Far East, and the meeting of the Russian-American frontier in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

It is intended for use in U.S. and Russian schools and libraries and by the general public in both countries. Scholars, particularly those who do not have ready access to major research libraries, also will benefit from the mass of primary material included in Meeting of Frontiers, much of which has never been published or is extremely rare".

In Russian, the description is as follows, ""

Traditional Buryat (Buriat) Costumes

I wanted to post this picture of Buryat girl that was perhaps taken at the turn of the century in Russia. Buryats or Buryat Mongols as we know inhabit regions that are in North and South of Baikal lake in Eastern Siberia. The image that has been posted here was scanned from a post-card that was published in Russian Empire ca. 1904. The reason, I posted this picture is to give us an idea how the cultural aspects of costumes changes in a hegemonic milieu.

Here is another type of Buriat costume. This type of costumes were worn by the members of Seleng Buriats. I need help identifying this picture of a buryat woman. I am not sure, if she belongs to Seleng or Ekhrit Buryats. Her earrings are typical of Seleng Buryats.

Jeremiah Curitin visited Siberia in 1909, and his book titled "A journey in Southern Siberia" is a classic must read for those who do not either Buriat or Russian languages.

This image is posted for the fair academic use only. It is in the public domain, and it was pub…

Afanaskii Nikitin and Orientalism

What does Afanasii Nikitin's Khozheniia za tri moria tells us? Does it tell us of a journey of medieval traveller from Rus' who ends up by sheer accident of fate in Deccan, India? Or we can analyze it using Edward Said's politicized "Orientalism"? In upcoming essay, I will try to de-construct Afanasii Nikitin's Weltshauung as it appears in his own diaries. Important North American scholars have worked on interpreting meaning of what was said by the Fifteenth century travellers. The Soviets and Indian government have "idolized" this trip as one of the hallmarks of Soviet-Indian friendship and cooperation?
I on the other hand argue, that the description of India that was captured by observing eyes of Afanasii, indeed reflects nascent orientalism that is a product of insecurities of Afanasii. His invocation of various names of God in Arabic at the conclusion of manuscript does not necessarily mean that he had converted to Islam. The deconstruction frame…
